Pre-Transplant: EKG

EKG stands for the German word, electrokardiogramm, and measures how fast your heart is beating and whether or not those beats have a steady or erratic rhythm.  No electricity is supplied across the electrodes applied, but instead they simply measure the low-level electrical activity generated in our own thoracic/cardio system which comes through the skin.  For those of you who have never had an EKG, you can relax – even those with a low pain threshold will likely not find anything to worry about with this test.  While laying flat, the sticky pads of electrodes are attached to your chest and legs, and connected to the EKG machine by thin wires.  There is no sensation during the test, and it’s over very quickly.
