Status Update: Dec. 2007

It took about 2 yards of gauze to pack the wound on each cleaning.  In theory the opening should have been getting smaller, but it wasn't.  Meanwhile throughout December I was still experiencing a chronic, persistent cough and now had periodic gray-out episodes.  I was put on a wound vac to help speed up the healing.  This device is a pump that's worn around your shoulder, with a suction attachment that fits over the wound, and tubes that draw out fluid when under suction.  The tubes are visible outside of the pump and cycle this nasty-looking reddish-brown fluid for all to see.

I wore this device at work for most of the month of December, but between that and the gray-out episodes, I had to stop working at the start of Jan.  At this point there was still no diagnosis of my illness.
